Voices from the green transition
The climate crisis and more recently energy security has put decarbonisation at the top of the agenda of most governments. Reducing emissions to net-zero requires a dramatic change in industrial production and causes huge employment and land use. Much of the pressure to decarbonize has a disproportionate impact on the global South. How are the international plans negotiated by people located in differing political economies?
This film explores how social actors in two cases, South Africa and Chile look at their spatial locations and power within the international system. They have various methods of making demands for a just transition, emphasising that the elimination of fossil fuels as well as the dematerialisation of the economy should not happen at the expense of workers or communities. Drawing from trade union workshops, interviews with workers and indigenous community members and policymakers, we drew a portrait of the situation on the ground.
