CoSea Critical Visions from the Sea
CoSea explores the complex relationship between coastal societies and the marine environment through the case of the Gulf of Anzio, Italy. Emerging from the participatory research activities of the CO>SEA project, the documentary investigates a series of socio-environmental challenges affecting the coast, including marine pollution, coastal erosion, beach privatization, and harbour silting. Through interviews, field observations and visual documentation, the film examines how these global ocean crises manifest in everyday life at the local level. It highlights the perspectives and experiences of people who live and work by the sea—fishers, residents, and community members—revealing how environmental change reshapes livelihoods, public space, and the social uses of coastal environments. More broadly, the documentary aims to make visible the fragile and contested relationship between society and the ocean. By connecting scientific research with lived experience, it invites viewers to reflect on the environmental transformations affecting coastal ecosystems and on the collective responsibility to understand, debate, and address these challenges.
