Do Sheep Dream of Electric Ruins? sets out to explore the life cycle and afterlife of media infrastructures. Focusing on the ruins of the Marconi wireless station at Derrigimlagh in Connemara, the film asks what remains once technological systems designed for speed and connectivity fall silent. It examines how media infrastructures, often built with short operational lifespans, leave long-term environmental and material traces in the landscapes that host them.
Through field recordings, archival research, and speculative AI-generated sequences, the film places this early twentieth-century wireless site in dialogue with contemporary data centers and emerging AI infrastructures. It considers how peripheral rural regions often bear the ecological costs of technological progress, while the benefits are distributed elsewhere.
By foregrounding the continued presence of non-native sheep grazing among the concrete remains, the film reflects on cycles of extraction, obsolescence, and ecological renewal. It seeks to prompt critical reflection on how we design, value, and abandon technological systems, and to question what more ecologically responsible and socially just infrastructural futures might entail. On location, the unexpected presence of sheep reshaped the project. The film became an experimental hybrid: a comparison of the sonic landscapes of abandoned and contemporary infrastructures, and a speculative, more-than-human encounter with technology that imagines the multispecies lifeworlds that may inhabit all infrastructures once they become obsolete.
