Interlocutors
This project took shape over just three months, beginning with a message to one of the staff farmers, at the Oxford Tract in Berkeley, CA. It was a place where I had put my hands in the soil as a student volunteer periodically over about three years.
I felt called to document the unique relationship between people and place that I had witnessed in this space. I chose the title of “interlocutors” to reflect a process of interdependence, which stands contrary to human-centered ontologies of ownership and capital accumulation that view land as lifeless. The film seeks to foreground this reciprocal relationship/dialogue/conversation amidst the backdrop of university-owned land and an otherwise busy and often uneven urban landscape.
