Not Our Games A Community’s Stand Against Displacement
The film set out to explore the impact of the 2016 Olympic Games on the Vila Autodromo favela, which suffered forced evictions as a result of the Games. Located directly alongside the Olympic park in Rio de Janeiro, the community became emblematic of the wave of favela evictions that was stimulated by the mega-event led urbanism. The film therefore explores the resistance as well as the after-effects of this, including the Evictions Museum that was created to continue the community’s fight for housing rights, both in their own community and elsewhere. The people of the Vila Autodromo favela were forced out of their homes by construction work for the Mega Sporting Event (MSE) that was the 2016 Olympic Games. The film gives insight to the concept that, if MSEs benefit the already privileged, they often do so to the detriment of the most marginalized.
