Queer Journeys Through Suburbia
This film set out to explore how creative practice can function as a form of geographic research, particularly within the often overlooked landscapes of suburbia. As a photographer, I was interested in how walking, looking, and image making can operate as methods for investigating spatial experience, ways of noticing the subtle forces that shape how we move, meet, and feel in everyday environments. The project asks what a visual artist can contribute to geographic questions, and what photography can reveal that more conventional research methods might not.
The film also examines suburbia as a complex geography structured by social norms and inequalities. By retracing GPS routes generated through a queer dating app, the work explores how digital technologies shape movement and connection, and how desire and intimacy are redirected when public space feels constrained. Returning to the site of a past encounter allowed me to consider the emotional afterlives of place; how memory, orientation, and absence linger in the landscape.
Ultimately, the film uses artistic methods to make visible the hidden routes queer people navigate through suburban space, contributing to wider conversations about how more just and inclusive geographies might be imagined.
