Space in Spotlight
A look at how film-making can support science communication as a cultural practice of meaning-making. Specifically, the project examined how a transdisciplinary team can use docufiction to translate a geographic perspective into an audiovisual form that is accessible to broader publics without flattening complexity. Rather than treating communication as a one-way transfer, the film was developed as an open meaning offer that invites interpretation and supports shared sense-making around a socio-scientific issue.
The scientific focus was therefore not only the topic depicted on screen, but the production question itself. How can experiential and affective dimensions that matter for geographic understanding be rendered visible and discussable through narrative, imagery, rhythm, and sound. How can documentary material and staged scenes be combined in ways that protect participants, avoid stereotyping, and still provide orientation. And how can iterative collaboration between research and film practice make the underlying assumptions, trade-offs, and responsibilities explicit. In this sense, the film set out to explore docufiction as an epistemic and communicative method for making geographic knowledge culturally legible and collectively negotiable.
