We went, we went (Gelem, Gelem)
Gelem, Gelem is a culmination of community work with the Romani women whose lives are narrated in a succession of stories about trauma, migration, hardship, and triumph. Directing and illustrating this short has meant entering the lives of a community whose stories are rarely represented and bringing them out for the world to see. The film was made based on 6 workshops run in collaboration with KaskoSan Roma Charity. A group of women were seen in weekly visual workshops through which stories of migration were explored through drawing and storytelling. The project was supported by Salford University and backed by the Ideas Fund (The British Science Association).
