Where is Home?
An exploration of growing up in Oakland Chinatown as a first-generation immigrant from China. The film reflects on the complexities of closeness between grandparents and grandchildren — how conversations can feel distant, shaped by age, language barriers, or past experiences too painful to share.
It also sets out to examine the idea of community, revealing how strangers organically interact and coexist within the place they call home. The experience of childhood is traced from one’s birthplace, to being pushed in a stroller as a baby, to playing in the park as a toddler, to being a teenager gathering on the basketball court, and finally an adult returning to their childhood home to speak with their grandfather.
Structured as a passage of time, the film begins in daylight and ends at night to mirror the feeling of closing a chapter in a book. While Oakland Chinatown is a home for many Chinese immigrants, their children question where their roots began and how this community came to exist.
